The Compress Image Control Palette is a floating dialog that can be positioned anywhere on the screen. It provides the controls to set the compression of the active image.
This dialog is visible when you are in Compress Image mode (ie the Compress Image button is down).
To show or hide the Compress Image dialog, click View->Toolbars->Control Palette or press the button.
Select JPG, GIF, PNG or TIFF to change the Optimized Image file type.
JPG Selected
When JPG is selected the sliders are: JPEG Quality and Extra Compression/MagiCompression. To change between MagiCompression and Extra Compression click the auto button to the left of the slider.
To change each slider press the left mouse button down on the control and move it. To change a slider by 10% click on the slider bar to the left or right of the handle. These values can also be changed by typing a new value into the edit box to the left of each slider and pressing return or using the up and down controls.
To apply 50% MagiCompression to the whole image press the button. Press the delete button
to remove MagiCompression.
Press the Region button to display the region window and start working with regional compression and optimization.
Press the Whole Image button to switch back to working with the whole Image.

GIF or PNG Selected
When GIF or PNG is selected the sliders are: Number of Colors and % Dithering.
To change each slider press the left mouse button down on the control and move it. To change a slider by 10% click on the slider bar to the left or right of the handle. These values can also be changed by typing a new value into the edit box to the right of each slider and pressing return or using the up and down controls.
Use the HiQ button to improve the palette selection.
You should use the other controls to determine the settings you want (accepting that some of the colors will be altered slightly). When you are happy with the image press the HiQ button to get the final optimized version. Computing the HiQ image will take a few seconds.
The HiQ function will get the best possible matching of the palette to the colors of your image. If you use any of the controls again after pressing the HiQ button you should press the HiQ button again before saving.

Press the Whole Image button to switch back to working with the whole Image.

In some circumstances you may wish to save the image uncompressed. For example you may wish to save an enhanced image for later use but without the loss of quality that the other file types would result in. Another example would be if you wanted to put more than one Caption on an image. In this case you could add the first caption and out put to a .TIFF. You could then run the image through Image Optimizer again and add a 2nd caption but this time output to .JPG. This would avoid JPEG compressing the image twice which is best avoided as it decreases the quality slightly.
